| The paper traces the shocks that libraries have weathered over the past thirty years—from the open internet to mobile internet and, most recently,to generative AI—while chronicling their ongoing journey of digital transformation. It argues that three historical mutations have forged the cultural DNA of libraries and remain the strongest drivers of their evolution. To keep that evolution alive, the profession needs a “smart library movement” that reinvents its philosophy and reignites a renaissance of reading. In a world accelerating beyond our control, what we lack is not more information but better wisdom; not greater speed but deeper reflection; not louder voices but truer companionship. |
